Double Height Bedroom
In many countries, space is far too precious to considerwasting it with soaring ceilings. Within North America, high ceilings are quite commonplace in many areas, as are great rooms which feature double height rooms. The dilemma many have with the extra height is in making the space feel complete, possibly even cosy.
Bringing the Outdoors In
I love natural light, which can completely transform your interiors.
If you're adding lots of windows or opting for an entire wall of glass, consider both privacy and temperature control. As much as I love the sun, the window quality will impact whether you swelter in the summer and freeze in the winter.
There are plenty of window film options if privacy is not an issue but you want to add to your home's R-value and reflect some of those UV rays. Layering draperies or automated blinds is another great option. As a bonus, the fabric often helps absorb sound and improve acoustics.
Show and Tell
Make a statement with your art. Large, bold pieces work especially well.
Consider using the Rule of Thirds and visually splitting the wall into three vertical sections or levels.
If you're a reader or have artful collections to display, floor to ceiling shelving — with a library ladder — makes great use of space.
Notice that built-ins can continue effectively between two storeys even when there is a "floor" dissecting the height.
Make the Ceiling a Star
Applying unique finishes or textures to the ceiling will have instant visual impact.
Beams and other architectural details, such as tiered or trayed elements, also work.
To draw the eye upwards, though not necessarily directly to the ceiling, install statement lighting. A standard chandelier you'd hang over the dining room table will look dwarfed here. Opt for fixtures with length that work with the scale of the room.
